Willi Baumeister on canvas, poster, wallpaper and ArtFrame by Peter Balan

Willi Baumeister (1889-1955) was a German painter, graphic artist, and typographer who ranks among the most important representatives of classical modernism in Germany. He studied at the Stuttgart Art Academy and developed from Impressionism through Constructivism to abstract art. His most important series of works from the 1940s include "Primordial Images," "Games of Ninepins," and "Metaphysical Landscapes". During the Nazi era, his works were denounced as "degenerate art," and he was banned from painting and exhibiting. After 1945, he became a professor in Stuttgart and shaped the legitimation of abstract art in the post-war period with his theoretical work "The Unknown in Art" (1947).
