Joaquín Torres-García (1874–1949) was a significant Uruguayan artist of the 20th century, known for his contribution to Constructivism. He integrated abstract forms with symbolic elements, inspired by prehistoric art and Latin American culture. His movement "Universalismo Constructivo" emphasized a universal language of forms and symbols and profoundly influenced the art scene in Latin America and beyond.
