I came across this beautiful landscape in Senegal during one of my travels. It is dominated by the majestic baobab trees, which gracefully frame the area like sentinels of nature. The fruits of these trees are hard and nutritious; they are used to make drinks and other products. The large group of baobabs on the horizon offers a spectacular view and shows the true richness of this land.
It seems as if the trees have the last word here. In this panoramic photo, we see a unique landscape that leaves a deep impression. This landscape not only changed my view but also my feelings. I came across it while searching for birds in North Africa. One of the species I followed there was the greylag harrier. This bird of prey winters in Senegal and sometimes shows itself in these vast plains.
To count these birds, you traverse a diversity of landscapes: steppes, grasslands, and whatnot. But Senegal is characterised by its vast emptiness. In spring, when the rainy season arrives, the barren land transforms into a sea of lush grass. That grass is later harvested, to feed animals or for other uses.
This landscape is an ode to Senegal. As in Madagascar, where large baobabs also show off, these trees here tell a powerful story. "Look at me," nature seems to be saying. "Respect my strength and beauty." And we did. This trip and this landscape remain a reminder of how impressive nature is, and how small we are in it.
