A hank or strang is a 'dead' river arm. Rivers meander and curve out into ever-larger loops. Due to flow velocity differences, the river eventually cuts through its own loop. While the river continues to flow via the greatly shortened route, the loop remains as a dead river arm in the landscape. Another example in Gelderland is the Rijnstrangen near Zevenaar.
The Dieren Hank is a dead arm of the river IJssel between Dieren and Doesburg. The land around it belongs to Het Hof te Dieren and is owned by Landgoed Twickel.
