About "Millennial Oak"

About the artwork

This tree is called the thousand-year-old oak, but experts estimate it to be between 450 and 600 years old, plus or minus a century. Impressive it is, though. With Doornenburg castle in the background known from the 12-part TV series Floris that aired in 1969. This series with well-known names such as Paul Verhoeven, Rutger Hauer (Floris) and Jos Bergman has been repeated many more times.

Filming took place in the summer and autumn of 1968, largely at Doornenburg Castle and also at Hernen Castle, Loevestein Castle and in Ghent and Bruges, among other locations.

The castle can also be visited. There was already a fortified house on the site of the castle in the 9th century, known as Villa Dorenburc. From this, a modest castle developed in the 13th century, which was later expanded in stages.

Doornenburg Castle remained inhabited until the 19th century. Then it fell into disrepair. In 1936, the Stichting tot Behoud van den Doornenburg (Foundation for the Preservation of Doornenburg) was established, which had the castle restored from 1937 onwards. In 1941, the restoration was completed. At the end of World War II, the castle was almost completely destroyed by a British bombardment. From 1947 to 1968, the castle was completely rebuilt.
