Watercolour painting of a lion

by Christian Ovís

A young lion looks straight ahead in this warm animal portrait. His large round ears, dark eyes and small black nose give his face a friendly expression. Fine whiskers and small dark dots surround the pale muzzle. The mane forms a broad ring of golden yellow and orange strokes, with a few longer, pointed tufts at the top. Below the head, the chest gradually merges into soft yellow shapes.

Translucent colours, loose edges and small splashes against the light background give the image a watercolour appearance. Orange and brown tones blend together around the sides of the head. Dark accents inside the ears and around the eyes add depth to the portrait. The muzzle and chin remain light, drawing attention towards the centre of the face. A few blue, yellow and red dots introduce a playful contrast to the predominantly warm palette.

This lion illustration suits a nursery, a child's bedroom or a cosy reading corner. Its gentle character pairs well with wood, cream and warm earthy colours. A plain wall gives the mane and the small facial details room to stand out. Alongside other animal portraits, it can form a cheerful collection, while the lion also remains a recognisable focal point on its own.
