The interior of Salzburg Cathedral impresses with its majestic expanse, baroque splendour and harmonious architecture. The three-nave basilica is kept in light colours, predominantly white and grey tones, which gives the room a light, almost heavenly atmosphere.
High, skilfully crafted columns support the vaulted ceiling, which is richly decorated with stucco and floral ornaments. The dome rises mightily above the crossing and draws the eye upwards with its frescoes. Scenes from the life of St Rupert and other biblical depictions adorn the ceiling and walls, masterfully painted and embellished with gold accents.
The main altar is magnificently decorated: A large-format altarpiece, framed by Corinthian columns and gilded elements, stands in the centre. To the left and right of it are smaller altars, also richly decorated. The organ in the west gallery is an eye-catcher - with its gilded façade and ornately carved case, it looks like an altar of sound in its own right.
Overall, the interior of Salzburg Cathedral radiates a dignified, solemn calm. Light floods in through high arched windows, emphasising the symmetry, clarity and sublime beauty of this important sacred building.
