When is a work of art or an image abstract? When it is not recognisable as something that is an image of reality? Or also when it is an image of something existing but reduced to nothing more than shape, line and colour. This is a photo of part of a ship's hull: a steel plate with a welded seam at the bottom and part of a column welded onto it to protect and strengthen the hull in case of impact. You might think it's an echo of a Barnett Newmann painting but this is just outside in the sun with the gradient hue due to the curvature of the plates making it not dull but, together with the beam, creating tension and curiosity.
