In the end, there is no real difference between the exotic leaves of the banana bean or palm leaves in a tropical country and the leaf of a plant you can find in a field close to home. They are green and shiny and have a lot of detail up close. So too with these leaves of the corn plant. It is amazing that one week you drive past a field near you and don't see much more than some shabby plants, but when you drive past the field again shortly after, you can't look over the plants as they tower above you like a dense wall. It is one of the clear signs that it is full summer and farmers are preparing for harvest. Not that you as a consumer will see much of it. Most of it will be used as animal feed. From a distance, it looks monotonous, uniform and boring but up close, the plants have a beauty of their own with their big shiny leaves and the cobs half hidden in the axils of the stalk. So the familiar becomes special again with its own beauty after all.
