Just a little north of Liverpool in the wide mouth of the Mersey lies the town of Crosby. At high tide there is a wide beach, but when the tide is out the stretch of sand stretches for hundreds of metres. Artist Antony Gormsby placed a large number of identical statues of a naked man looking out over the water there. At high tide, you only see the statues close to the dunes sometimes almost under the sand. As the water subsides, more and more male figures appear. First their heads and then their bodies. With rising water, they disappear again. Even on a beautiful clear sunny afternoon, it is an alienating sight to see those figures, already weather-beaten and salt-touched and overgrown over the years, staring silently across the water.
