Cityscape of the Market of Maastricht. The Market acquired its present form after 1659, when the old Cloth Hall, the Prison Gate and the dilapidated city wall had to be demolished for the construction of the new Maastricht Town Hall. The first stone for the town hall, designed by the Dutch master builder Pieter Post, was laid in 1659.
