About "Groningen cityscape"

by Aad Trompert

About the artwork

The "Cityscape Groningen" shows the city's most beautiful and important buildings summarised in a photo. Groningen is the capital of the province of Groningen. The place is referred to simply as the City in the province of Groningen and parts of Drenthe. In 2023, the city of Groningen had 206,010 inhabitants. It is the largest city in the northern Netherlands.
As a Hanseatic city, Groningen was part of the North German trade network, but it later became mainly a regional market centre. After this, Groningen gradually developed into an influential centre of power. During the 15th century, at the height of its power, the city could actually be considered a city-state.
Especially in the 12th and 13th centuries, many churches were built in Groningen, developing its own style: romanogothic. This style gives Groningen's churches an entirely unique character within the Netherlands. The same style was also applied directly across the German border in the East Frisian part of Lower Saxony, and to a limited extent in the Dutch province of Friesland.
The Martinitoren is the city's most famous building. From the 19th century dates the beautiful University Building, also well worth a visit. As is the Korenbeurs. Finally, the city's railway station is an eye-catcher especially because of its station hall with its beautiful ceiling and tile panels.

The city's buildings were photographed individually and then compiled into a picture. The reflection in the water adds power to the cityscape.
