About ‘Sisterhouse Zuidsingel Amersfoort’ by Aad Trompert

The Sisterhouse on Zuidsingel in Amersfoort was designed by architect H. Kroes in 1900. The building is still in use as a convent. The building is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as a very flawless example of an inner-city convent building, built in a richly detailed architectural style with influences from the Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. The building is also of cultural-historical importance as an expression of the recovering Catholicism in the second half of the 19th century in the city of Amersfoort.

The monastery was purchased by developer Schipper Bosch in 2020. They will eventually realise houses and flats in the monumental convent 'with respect for history'. The remaining 55 sisters will keep a separate living area there for the time being.

The crane on the front edge is 'n fantasy from the harbour. A wooden sculpture by artist Thijs Trompert hangs from it.
