About ‘Utrecht . Cityscape . Oudegracht’ by Aad Trompert

The Cityscape of Utrecht is composed of just about every important monumental building and church in the city. These have been photographed piece by piece and brought back together in this cityscape along the Oudegracht. All of monumental Utrecht together with the Oudegracht in one view!

The Dom, of course, stands proudly at the heart of the Cityscape. The old city hall also plays an important role as, for example, in the beautiful painting by Reinier Craeyvanger. And of course I have not forgotten the St Augustine's Church. A Waterstaatskerk in neo-classical style. The Buurkerk next to the Dom is no longer in use as a church. It was the oldest of the city's four medieval parish churches and was dedicated to Mary. Today, the building houses the Museum Speelklok. Traditionally, the Buurkerk is largely built in between the surrounding houses and was therefore difficult to photograph.

The approximately two-kilometre-long Oudegracht can be seen as the connecting piece between the Kromme Rijn and the Vecht and cuts through the entire city centre from south to north. For centuries, it has been the city's main artery. The system of wharves and wharf cellars of Utrecht's Oudegracht is unique in the world on this scale. The Oudegracht therefore forms the basis of the cityscape!
