Poppy or poppy is the common name for plants in the Papaveraceae family. You will find annuals, biennials and perennials in this group. These flowers bloom briefly, but are a real feast to behold. They bring that warm summer feeling to your garden in May and June.
The poppy flower is a symbol of World War I in the UK, but also in many other countries, as they flowered frequently on the battlefields in Flanders.
The poppy can be found during most World War I commemorations. In the UK, Remembrance Day (or Poppy Day) is held on 11 November, the day World War I ended in 1918. During this day, the fallen of World War I are commemorated, as well as soldiers who died in armed conflicts afterwards.
