A fresco (Italian for "verse") is a wall or ceiling painting in which the paint is applied directly to the wet lime so that, when dry, it forms a single entity with it. The advantage of fresco's is that the pigments, absorbed by the lime layer, are very durable. The disadvantage is that later corrections are not possible. Working with paint on fresh wet lime is called painting al fresco or in fresco.
