Haflinger with flowers and butterflies against a black background by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

A Haflinger stands facing the camera against a black background; its light-coloured mane falls in a broad strand across its forehead and eye, down to its shoulder. A wreath of orange and berry-red dahlias is woven into the mane, whilst delicate paper butterflies in black and light blue rest on its forehead, cheek and neck. Its gaze passes calmly past the camera.

The whiskers are clearly visible around her muzzle, and that is no coincidence. Whiskers are sensory organs: horses cannot see the area directly in front of their own noses and use these hairs to feel their way. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has therefore banned their shaving with effect from 1 July 2021 in international competition. A portrait depicting her shows an animal from which nothing has been taken away.

The motif is summery and cheerful rather than solemn. The warm floral tones complement the chestnut coat, whilst the light blue of the butterflies provides the sole cool accent. It is suitable for hallways, bedrooms, children’s rooms, courtyard cafés and riding stables, and works well all year round.

On canvas, the mane and flowers appear soft, whilst on acrylic glass the butterflies and individual hairs stand out more clearly. A gift for Haflinger owners, riding club members and anyone looking for animal portraits with a playful touch.
