A violin ray with white spots on a light sandy background by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

A guitar ray lies fully stretched out on light-coloured, ribbed sand. A fine pattern of white spots runs across its head and back, standing out clearly against its sand-coloured body. The golden eye is situated on the side of the flat front part of the body, behind which are two dorsal fins and a powerful caudal fin.

The white speckled pattern is the most reliable feature for distinguishing between several very similar species of guitarfish. It remains throughout the animal’s life and is arranged slightly differently on each individual, much like a fingerprint. Guitarfish usually burrow into the sand during the day and only become active at dusk, when they dig crabs and mussels out of the sand.

The image is rich in detail yet serene. The dotted pattern gives the subject a delicate texture that holds up well when viewed up close, whilst the sand creates a sense of vastness. It is suitable for studies, dining rooms, libraries, classrooms and medical practices.

On acrylic glass, the white dots remain crisp; on canvas, the skin appears softer and more organic. A gift for divers, for those interested in natural history, and for anyone who likes animals they’ve never heard of before.
