A real hawksbill turtle making eye contact above a wall of soft corals by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

A hawksbill turtle glides just above a densely vegetated reef wall and turns its head directly towards the camera. The narrow, tapered beak – which gives it its name – and the darkly patterned horny plates on its head and front flippers can be seen in great detail. Behind it, the reef shimmers in shades of turquoise, violet and deep green: soft corals swaying in the current.

Loggerhead sea turtles feed almost exclusively on sponges, thereby helping to maintain a balance in the reef’s growth. They are classified as critically endangered. An encounter at eye level like this is a matter of luck and rarely lasts longer than a few seconds, as the animals move on after a short while.

The image comes to life through the direct gaze. It works as a tranquil focal point above a sideboard, in the bedroom opposite the bed, or in the bathroom, where the cool shades of blue and turquoise visually expand the space. In waiting areas and surgery rooms, it has a calming effect without being generic.

The depth of the water is most striking on acrylic glass; on canvas, the motif appears softer and warmer. A gift for divers, for supporters of marine conservation and for anyone who has ever encountered a turtle underwater.
