Suddenly a black shadow appeared near the pond: a male black woodpecker, his red crown contrasting brightly with his shiny dark feathers. Cautiously he stepped towards the water, looked around for a moment, then jumped in with a small splash. The cool water splashed high as he spread his wings wide and let himself be completely submerged. A moment later, he was quivering and shaking, water droplets like shimmering pearls flying around in the sun. Fresh, clean and visibly satisfied, he hopped back up the bank, ready to once again cut through the trees of the forest with his roaring call.
