On the thorny branch of a thistle bush sits a goldfinch, colourful and vibrant as if it had flown straight out of a painting. Its red mask, white cheeks and golden wing stripes contrast beautifully with the soft background colours. With quick, incisive movements, he pecks the tiny seeds from the flower heads, fearlessly among the spines.
It is a wondrous sight: the graceful bird extracting its meal from such a shaggy, prickly plant. Its beak works deftly, as if it knows exactly which seeds are worth picking.
For a moment, the goldfinch stops, looks around with an alert gaze and spreads its wings slightly, ready to fly up if necessary. But the lure of the seeds wins out, and he bends forward again, unruffled, as if nothing can distract him from this simple, nourishing moment.
