Blue-spotted stingray – blue spots and golden eyes by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

The head of a blue-spotted ray, filling the frame and captured at close quarters. Both eyes
are open; the iris glows a golden yellow, with the pupil appearing as a narrow slit
within it. Bright
blue spots are scattered across the sand-coloured skin throughout the image.

Directly behind the eyes, two further openings can be seen. These are the
blowholes. The ray uses these to take in water and channel it to its gills,
which, like its mouth, are situated on its underside. This allows it to breathe whilst it lies
buried in the sand with only its eyes visible.

The blue colour is not camouflage, but a warning. It signals to predators
the venomous spines on its tail, which the ray uses exclusively for defence
. During the day, the animals often rest beneath coral overhangs; as the tide comes in
, they search the sand for crabs and mussels.

As a wall hanging, this image is exceptionally striking. Vibrant ultramarine against
warm sandy beige creates the strongest colour contrast imaginable, and the shot is
so close-up that it almost appears graphic. It is suitable for living rooms,
bedrooms, children’s rooms, bathrooms, hallways, offices, surgeries, waiting rooms,
diving schools and hotels, and works well even in very large formats.

A gift for divers, snorkellers, children and anyone who loves bold colours.
