The coot has large blue-green legs with spread swimming lobes.
Both sexes have the same appearance.
The coot dives a lot, especially when searching for aquatic plants.
It does not like to fly, preferring to move across the water while running.
Even when taking off from the water, it first covers a stretch of running.
However, when migrating, which usually takes place 'at night, it can cover long distances.
The coot is an omnivore, feeding mainly on aquatic plants, molluscs and aquatic insects.
Seeds, grass and berries are also eaten.
The coot is monogamous.
In early April, 6 -10 eggs are laid, both parents brood and raise the young.
Sometimes there are two or three clutches per season.
Young from earlier clutches help the parents.
