A rusty horseshoe on the garden gate – a lucky charm in detail

by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

An old horseshoe hangs from the black bars of a wrought-iron gate.
It is completely covered in rust – in shades of orange, ochre and deep brown, with
a rough, cracked surface and rounded edges. You can tell
that it was worn for a long time and has been hanging here even longer: fine spider’s webs
stretch between the iron and the bars. The black, gleaming bars of the gate
provide a stark, clear contrast to the warm rust; behind them, a
summer garden unfolds into soft swathes of green, yellow and violet.

A horseshoe above a gate or door is one of the oldest good-luck charms of all.
There is still debate today about the correct orientation: according to a widespread German
belief, the ends must point upwards so that good luck does not escape –
whilst in other regions it is deliberately hung with the ends pointing downwards so that
good luck showers down on everyone who passes through. Here, it points downwards.

As a wall hanging, this motif captures a slice of country life whilst also serving as a symbol.
The combination of rusty orange, black and green suits rural, rustic and
modern interiors – in the hallway, the kitchen, the dining room, the living room,
the tack room, the riding stables, the farm café, the workshop or the garden shed.
On acrylic glass, the rust-coloured surface stands out particularly vividly; on
fine art paper, it appears warmer.

A gift for a housewarming, a wedding, the New Year, passing an exam
or for any new beginning – and for horse lovers, of course.
