Editing of a photo, taken in the Oostvaardersplassen, of a dead tree full of starlings. I waited until the whole flock flew up to take the photo.
The dead tree with barren branches rises above the reed field - in the distance, windmills grind through the air in search of electricity.
The flying swarm of starlings form a coordinated chaos where the dozens of birds seem to move as one organism in an undulating breathing mass inches apart, without touching each other.
At first glance, the leaves seem to jump off the tree.
The photograph was then edited into this image, which to me has a bit of the feel of an old Japanese drawing where the soft contrasts convey a dreamy feeling. There is also a sense of depth, layering in the image.
A form of photorealistic surrealism.
Tip: this work looks extra beautiful in a white baking frame. You can select the option and see the effect for yourself - give it a try!
