Sometimes it pays to take a shortcut. Late in the afternoon on a beautiful November day, the sun sets early here on the Côte d'Azur in southern France. On a road along the coast, east of Marseille, rocks rise high above the sea. The sinuous pine tree still manages to find hold in the rocky soil. A soothing view over a beautiful landscape.

The low sun casts long shadows, and the sky is already starting to colour. It's already November, and yet it's still comfortably warm here.

The Côte d'Azur's jagged coastline of high cliffs can be seen in the distance, with the more distant foothills dissolving into the misty sky. The blue sea water is already beginning to discolour from the reflection of the setting sun.
In the distance, almost on the horizon, in the misty mists lies an island. Presumably île Riou, the largest island in the Riou archipelago.

I'd like to stay here and, sitting under this pine tree, watch the sun set all the way through this mighty landscape, but we still have a long way to go, and on the unlit back roads in the dark, it's at an appropriate pace. Luckily, we still have the photos....
