About the artwork
This photo was taken at Corvey Abbey, one of the buildings on the world heritage list.
The monastery is located in Germany near the beautiful town of Höxter.
A simple corner by a staircase, where the light falls on the plasterwork through the thick walled window. Minimalist architectural photography, if you want to give it a name. In passing, it is not immediately noticeable, but on a somewhat closer look, it becomes clear that it was not built with a ruler and compass - no straight line is actually straight, no curve is really round.
For me it was a detail that had to be photographed.
The monastery was founded in 815 under the Latin name Corbeia nova and rebuilt in 822 at the end of the Westphalian slope near the river Weser. The abbey buildings were put into use in 823. The abbot established agricultural colonies there and it was farmers from the Oudenaarde area (East Flanders) who helped the monks to clear the land.
During the 9th and 10th centuries this was one of the most significant cultural centers in Northern Europe.
