A black pony with a long mane, seen in profile against a dark background

by Laura Georgi Tier- und Ladschaftsfotografie

A black pony is shown in profile, its head slightly lowered. The long, thick mane falls over its forehead and neck, extending well beyond its shoulders, with distinct rust-red tones at the tips. The background remains dark; only at the bottom edge of the picture can one make out the light-coloured sandy ground on which the animal stands. No bridle, no adornments, nothing but the pony.

The reddish tips are not a colour flaw, but rather bleached fur. A true black coat loses its depth when exposed to sunlight and takes on a reddish-brown hue on the mane, forelock and croup. Added to this, in hardy pony breeds, is the thick winter coat with long guard hairs that allow rain to roll off. Together, these elements create the texture that defines this image.

The motif comes across as friendly rather than austere and is therefore well-suited to spaces where a formal equine portrait would be too stark: children’s bedrooms, hallways, kitchens, courtyard cafés and doctors’ surgeries. It works equally well in small and large formats.

On canvas, the coat’s texture remains soft and warm, whilst on acrylic glass the rust-red tips stand out more clearly. A gift for pony owners, for those who share riding arrangements, and for adults who learnt to ride on a pony.
