The digital artwork Le Canard depicts a still life of a now vanished piece of Utrecht: a former wine bistro of the same name. The composition is static and carefully constructed, with a keen eye for colour, texture and atmosphere. The facade of the building dominates the image. Red-painted woodwork of windows and doors, peeling off in places where time has left its mark. Behind it is a wall of weathered, brownish-red bricks that radiates warmth despite the desolation of the scene.
The door is closed. No person to be seen, no movement. This reinforces the sense of transience - a place that once bustled with conversation and clinking glasses, but is now just memory. Above the restaurant hangs a classic Jupiler house sign, the only element with a hint of colour contrast: red and white with the Belgian beer brand's recognisable logo. The sign does not sway, as if even the wind has stopped passing by.
The atmosphere is at once nostalgic and contemplative. The artist has clearly played with lighting: soft shadows suggest a late afternoon light, which gives just enough relief to the wood and stones without brightening anything. The absence of people and the closed nature of the scene give the work a certain tranquillity, but also a wistful charge. Le Canard is not a reconstruction, but a digital memory - a visual ode to what has been, captured in silence and structure. The work invites the viewer to dwell on the beauty of the everyday, even in decay.
