"Weerdsingel WZ 19" is the seventh work in a series of nine digital artworks that together depict an intimate life journey. This composition focuses on the simple yet telling front door of a house on Weerdsingel Westzijde in Utrecht -a parental home of the artist. The door symbolises a threshold moment: the departure from the parental family and the step towards independence.
In the work, the everyday is elevated to something universal. The front door is depicted in soft, diffuse light, evoking an atmosphere of melancholy and hope. Textures are delicately digitally worked out: weathered wood, charred mailbox, subtly flaking paint - details that reveal traces of time and memory.
Use of colour plays a major role; a muted palette of blues and greys dominates, reinforcing a sense of inner silence and reflection. At the same time, a lively piece of green pops up in the corner of the sculpture: a young plant, symbolising new growth.
"Weerdsingel WZ 19" exudes connection with the city of Utrecht and the personal history of the artist, who spent his childhood here. This phase of saying goodbye resonates not only melancholy, but also an open, curious look to the future. The work invites the viewer to reflect on the places that shape us - and on the inevitable letting go that makes growth possible.
