"Schonauwensingel 12" is the fifth digital artwork in a series of nine, in which the artist - born and raised in Utrecht - explores his personal history and identity through everyday architectural elements. This work shows the porch of a parental home, located on Schonauwensingel, a place steeped in memories, familiarity and a deep-rooted connection to the city.
The composition captures the portrait of the door in stunning detail and with a subtle layering: weathered paint, a small crack in the glass, the house number just slightly crooked - all these elements contribute to a tangible sense of authenticity. The image appears simple at first glance, but beneath the surface contains a complex play of light, texture and memory. Digital processing gives the work a timeless quality; shadows move slowly, as if the sun is always falling just differently, and the door occasionally seems to breathe, as if the house is alive.
The choice of the digital medium allows the artist to break through the static nature of a façade and show the house as a living organism - a place that preserves stories, has seen people come and go, and in which a life is rooted. "Schonauwensingel 12" is not a simple registration of a place, but an emotionally charged window to the past, and a tribute to the place where artistry originated. The work invites reflection on home, origins and the quiet poetry of the everyday.
