The Belgian city of Charleroi is in the midst of change. Old industry is making way for new projects. This is certainly a good sign, but a unique heritage is in danger of being lost.
To capture it on film, I went there in July 2020 to photograph it. Along the Sambre runs a towpath where you can still see the old sites of Cockerill-Sambre then in almost full view. There was demolition work going on, so I went there to photograph.
With this image, I was particularly triggered by the symmetry in the image: the tower of the blast furnace appears in the grid of the fencing and is also reflected by the pool of water!
Ah, Charleroi on a grey day. Even the industrial archaeology there can be photogenic.
