In a world that is constantly in motion, this image captures a rare moment of stillness at the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus in Berlin. The clean lines of concrete and glass form an architectural backdrop in which the human figure almost appears as a detail, absorbed into the larger whole of modern architecture. Two figures, separated by height and distance, share the same space but not the same moment.
Above, someone sits in contemplation, detached from the hustle and bustle below. Below, another walks, absorbed in their own world, perhaps on their way somewhere, perhaps lost in thought. The diagonal staircase cuts through the image like a visual boundary between stillness and movement, between observing and acting, and emphasises the graphic interplay of lines so characteristic of this form of minimalist photography.
The black-and-white rendering reinforces the timeless character of this architectural photograph. Colour would be distracting; now only the essence remains: form, structure and rhythm. The interplay of light and shadow lends depth to an apparently minimalist whole and underscores the precision of Berlin’s urban architecture. This photograph is not just about a specific place, but about a universal feeling. About how, even within the same urban space, we each have our own pace and perspective. Sometimes we sit still and look. Sometimes we walk on without really seeing.
And somewhere in between, a moment of tranquillity arises that is detached from time.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
