There are cemeteries and there is Cimetière du Père-Lachaise. With some 3.5 million visitors a year and 69,000 tombstones, 30,000 of which have historic monument status, it is much more than a cemetery. With so many historical monuments, it is more like an open-air cemetery museum.
Walking among the sometimes new but often old weathered graves is a special experience. Rob Kemps wrote the book "Heaven on Earth" about this enchanting place in Paris but he is certainly not the only one who has committed stories about Père-Lachaise to paper. There are also many posters and photographs of this cemetery for sale. With my photos, I tried to capture the atmosphere by playing with lighting and contrast.
