A landscape of steel, fire and movement. In this photograph, the industrial heart of the Netherlands comes to life, where railway tracks wind their way past massive installations and smoking chimneys. What once symbolised progress and economic growth now also bears the marks of time and change. The imposing structures in the background dominate the scene: blast furnaces and pipelines running through the site like a network of veins. Here, iron ore was – and is – transformed into steel, a process that is not only technically impressive but also has a powerful visual impact. The plumes of smoke mingling with the grey sky reinforce the raw character of this place.
In the foreground, we see a shunting locomotive pulling a heavy load. The track winds its way through the site, emphasising the logistical complexity of steel production. Every element in the photograph has served a purpose; every detail contributes to the greater whole of industrial activity.
Yet this is more than just a functional landscape. It is also a place where history can be felt. Industrial sites such as this form an important part of our heritage. They tell the story of labour, innovation and humanity’s ceaseless drive to transform raw materials into progress.
At the same time, the image raises questions about the future. How do these monuments to industry relate to a world increasingly focused on sustainability? It is precisely in this tension between past and future that the power of industrial heritage lies.
This photograph captures that moment perfectly: a world that is still turning, but in which the passage of time is clearly visible.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
