About "The south-facing terrace of the Tower of Belem, Lisbon, Portugal."

About the artwork

The Torre de Belém, or Tower of Belém, is a beautiful historic defence tower on the banks of the Tagus River in Belém, a suburb of Lisbon.
For those who visit Lisbon and love history and architecture, this is one of the landmarks to visit. The building is actually unlike anything else, its typical location on the edge of the river, a bit off the lead, makes it even more special.
The tower was built between 1515 and 1521. It is a magnificent example of the so-called Manueline style, named after King Manuel under whose rule this tower was built. Originally this tower was located on a sandbank in the Tagus River, but after the 1755 earthquake, the course of the river changed so that the defensive structure now stands on the mainland.
The tower itself in its entirety and its location on the Tagus is very much captured, my depiction is limited to the beautiful ornaments on the terrace of the 1st floor, from where there is a nice view over the Tagus basin, or on the other side partly over Lisbon.
These historical sculpted elements, with the minimal colour palette of historical building material, form an image that will not get boring and fits into many kinds of environments, from informal and behind the sofa to business or office.
