The beautiful silver coast of Portugal's Costa de Prata by Marjolein Zijlstra

Portugal's Silver Coast, better known as the Costa de Prata has not yet been discovered by mass tourism. This region has much beauty to offer, so its unfamiliarity is surprising. The Costa de Prata is a captivating mix of beautiful natural beaches, rugged rocky coasts with beautiful vegetation, old fishing villages, historic towns and all that strung together by overwhelming nature. The attached image is the passage from the Atlantic Ocean through a low sandbank to the beautiful large Lagoon of Obidos. At high tide, the ocean feeds the lagoon with seawater after which, at low tide, the mixed salt and fresh water flows out again.
This vast lagoon of Óbidos with Foz do Arelho beach on one side and Bom Sucesso beach on the other is a favourite place to relax in summer and winter. Sand and seawater abound. The lagoon falls into two municipalities: Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha. Getting from one side, Caldas da Rainha - Foz do Arelho, to the other, Óbidos - Bom Sucesso, takes some time (by car!). That's how deep inland this lagoon goes. At low tide, you can easily walk near the estuary to several islets in the lagoon, and with a bit of swimming you'll also get to the other side. The low water is fun for children and many beachgoers enjoy lazing and bathing in the usually slightly warmer water than on the ocean side.
