The quiet gaze of the Common Kookaburra. by Robert Jan Smit

With its powerful beak, sharp gaze and striking plumage, the Common Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is a bird that immediately catches the eye. Yet the true power of this photograph lies not only in its appearance, but above all in the tranquillity it exudes. No exuberant action or theatrical pose, but a understated portrait in which every detail is revealed. The soft background allows all focus to be on the bird: the fine texture of the feathers, the dark eye and the characteristic markings around the head. The Common Kookaburra belongs to the kingfisher family and is best known for its distinctive call, which sounds like a roaring laugh. In Australia, that sound is inextricably linked to the landscape. But in this close-up portrait, all is quiet. It is precisely this that creates space to really observe the animal. The bird looks alert, thoughtful and almost curious. What makes this shot special is the combination of detail and simplicity. The natural colours keep the image calm, whilst the subtle depth of field creates a soft transition between subject and background. This results in a portrait that not only has documentary value, but also takes on an almost painterly quality. A moment of silence, captured in feathers and light.
