On the edge of the Oude Haven, the Witte Huis rises like a monument to courage, progress and resilience. Officially named the Witte Huis, this iconic building was completed in 1898 and, with its ten floors and height of 43 metres, was for a long time the tallest office building in Europe. For Rotterdam, it was a powerful symbol of modernity and urban ambition on the waterfront. The Oude Haven itself forms the historic heart of the city. For centuries, this area was a bustling hub of trade and shipping. The classic ships moored here today refer to that maritime past and give this cityscape an almost timeless appearance. In this photograph, historic ships, monumental architecture and contemporary city life come together to form a powerful image. During the bombing of 14 May 1940, the centre of Rotterdam was largely destroyed. Miraculously, the White House remained standing. Thanks to its sturdy construction and favourable location, the building survived the war virtually unscathed. This made it a rare silent witness to pre-war Rotterdam and an important historical anchor point in a city that had to reinvent itself. This photographic composition not only shows a recognisable Rotterdam icon, but also tells a story of survival, identity and continuity. The combination of the Witte Huis, the Oude Haven and the skyline makes this work particularly suitable as wall decoration, art on the wall or city photography for lovers of Rotterdam history and architecture. An atmospheric and meaningful work of art that adds character and depth to any interior – from a modern living room to a business environment.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
