Painting depicting the Groenmarkt in Leiden, with a view of the Aalmarkt and the Stille Rijn. Standing on the Hoogstraat, the Aalmarkt can be seen on the left and the Stille Rijn on the right. On the Hoogstraat a vegetable market can be seen. In the middle stands a woman with a child on her right hand.
Behind the woman, a woman is selling vegetables to a man wearing a black hat. To the left of the woman stands a man with a bucket over his right arm and tools in his right hand. Behind this man stands a young boy by a goat pulling a wagon in which a child is sitting.
To the far right of the scene are two more seated persons, a standing man with a hat, a man holding his hat in his right hand saluting, and a little boy with a fishing pole. In the foreground of the scene are baskets of vegetables with a severely emaciated dog on the right. On the left side of the canal, on the Aalmarkt, the Waag is depicted in front. In the distance, a bridge crosses the canal. Several ships and boats are moored in the water of the canal.
