The Abbey Church is one of the oldest religious buildings in the region and has its origins in a medieval abbey. As early as the thirteenth century, there was a monastery complex here where monks lived and worked. Over the centuries, the building changed in form and function, but the church remained the spiritual and historical heart of Loosduinen.
In this photo, the church stands out as a beacon of tranquillity among the traditional houses with their sloping roofs and brick facades. The bare branches of the trees betray the season and give the image a subdued, almost timeless character. The soft light and subtle monochrome tones reinforce that sense of history. It seems as if time slows down here for a moment.
What makes this place special is the combination of large and small. The church itself tells the story of centuries of history, while the surrounding houses reflect everyday life today. Together, they form a typical Dutch village scene, right in the middle of the city.
The Abbey Church of Loosduinen is therefore not only a monument, but also a living part of the neighbourhood. A place where past and present meet, where stories of generations come together and where the spire still towers above the village as a landmark for everyone who passes by.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
