Teotihuacán is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Mexico and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And rightly so. I was very impressed.
The city reached its heyday between 100 and 650 AD and was once one of the largest metropolises in the ancient world with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants and was an important religious, political and economic centre that traded with distant regions. In the 7th or 8th century, however, Teotihuacán was abandoned for unknown reasons, possibly due to civil unrest or environmental changes. When the Aztecs discovered the ruins centuries later, they believed it to be the city of the gods - hence its current name, which means "place where men become gods".
