I went to Kinderdijk with high expectations. It promised to be a beautiful evening: a peaceful atmosphere, iconic windmills and the warm light of the setting sun. However, as the sun sank lower and lower, a thick cloud cover moved in my direction from the west - exactly in the direction where I was hoping to see that magical sunset.
For a moment, it seemed the moment was lost. But nature had a little gift in store. Right above me, the cloud cover broke open for a brief moment. Through that small opening, sunlight broke in and coloured the clouds in the opposite direction a brilliant golden yellow .
The soft light reflected beautifully in the still waters of the small river. I chose my composition carefully: the windmills proudly in the centre, their reflection perfectly in focus. The result was not a fiery sunset as expected, but a subdued and poetic scene.
Kinderdijk , with its UNESCO World Heritage Site and unique landscapes, proves that beauty often appears unexpectedly. Even when clouds hide the sun, the evening can still be magical. For anyone wanting to capture a sunset here: look behind you too - sometimes the miracle plays out there.
