Strasbourg Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, Strassburger Münster) is among the largest and most famous cathedrals in France. Construction of the cathedral built of pink sandstone began in 1176 and was completed in 1439 after a 263-year construction period of almost continuous work. The cathedral has one of the tallest church towers in the world; the north tower measures 142 metres and was the tallest structure in the world from 1647 to 1874. Our Lady of Strasbourg has become the epitome of southern German Gothic architecture. In 1620, Constantijn Huygens climbed the tower's spire on the outside at the risk of his life.
