On an autumn trip to South Tyrol, Seiser Alm was high on my list. This vast mountain meadow is a photographer's dream: rolling hills, characteristic wooden huts and behind them the imposing Dolomites. For this shot, I left still in the dark, armed with camera, tripod and thermos bottle. The sky was clear, and I was lucky that there was just a little mist hanging between the mountain peaks, just what I was hoping for.
As the sun slowly rose behind the mountains, the sky coloured in warm hues of orange and pink. The first rays of the sun hit the landscape, giving off that typical golden glow you only see in the early morning. I chose a composition where the huts and trees in the foreground enhance the depth, and the sun shines subtly between the peaks.
Once back in the Netherlands, I always edit my images from behind my desk. There, I select the best shot and get to work on post-processing. I carefully tune contrast, colour and sharpness to preserve the tranquillity, light and atmosphere of that moment.
A work that for me captures the magic of Seiser Alm in autumn: quiet, grand and full of character.
