Haarlem, a city that continues to touch me. I lived there for many years and still return often, especially with my camera in hand. I took this photo on an evening when everything came together: silence, clarity and a water surface so smooth that it seemed as if the city was looking at itself in a mirror.
From the quay opposite the Waag, I set up my camera. No wind, no boats, just the reflection of the historic facades, Teylers Museum and the Waag in the Spaarne. The symmetry was almost perfect, and the serenity of the moment gave the scene a hushed beauty.
I waited patiently for the light to fall just right. Not a dramatic sunset, but an even exposure that balanced the architecture and the water. After a series of shots, I knew there was something special among them.
At home, the second part of the process began: selecting and editing the photo. I wanted to preserve the atmosphere as I had experienced it on site - intimate, subdued and full of character.
The end result is a tribute to Haarlem as I know it: authentic, hushed and rich in history. An image that, when hanging on your wall, brings a little bit of Spaarne into your home every day.
