The full title of this painting, 'Take the Fair Face of Woman, and Gently Suspending, With Butterflies, Flowers, and Jewels Attending, Thus Your Fairy is Made of Most Beautiful Things.' is apparently taken from a lost poem by someone called Charles Ede. Sophie Gengembre Anderson was a prolific Victorian painter. She painted romanticism style, Italian genre style, and neoclassicism style paintings, but she specialised in paintings of women and children, which also helped her to succeed as an artist and maintain a living. She was born in Paris but spent her life in Britain, America and Capri. Her husband was also a painter.
