Lilith was the name of a woman in some ancient texts, who was said to be the first wife of Adam, but Adam discarded her because she was an evil seductress, femme fatale type character, who disobeyed him. This painting shows a beautiful, also vain and self-absorbed, more 'modern' woman (for his time), who has the same name, as Rossetti is drawing a parallel with her. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was one of the most important members and founders of the pre-raphaelite art movement. He painted many beautiful women, in paintings with classical and mythological subject matter. At first, he used his mistress Fanny Cornforth as the model for an earlier version of this painting, but later changed her face to that of another model called Alexa Wilding, as shown in this final version. Dante Gabriel Rossetti also wrote a poem to accompany this painting, called 'Body's Beauty':
"Body's Beauty
Of Adam’s first wife, Lilith, it is told
(The witch he loved before the gift of Eve,)
That, ere the snake’s, her sweet tongue could deceive,
And her enchanted hair was the first gold.
And still she sits, young while the earth is old,
And, subtly of herself contemplative,
Draws men to watch the bright web she can weave,
Till heart and body and life are in its hold.
The rose and poppy are her flowers; for where
Is he not found, O Lilith, whom shed scent
And soft-shed kisses and soft sleep shall snare?
Lo! as that youth’s eyes burned at thine, so went
Thy spell through him, and left his straight neck bent
And round his heart one strangling golden hair."
"I got a lot to say... I can't remember now." Ramones.
