Saint Bride, or Saint Brigid of Kildare, is the female patron saint of Ireland, and one of its three national saints. She founded the abbey of Kildare, and several other convents. Much historical infomation about her life is unclear and legendary, and she may have associations with the Celtic goddess Brigid. Her feast day is the same as the ancient Celtic feast of Imbolc, which marks the first day of spring. John Duncan was involved in the 'Symbolist' art movement, and was also very interested in Celtic mythology and Christian mysticism. This painting depicts the legendary story in which Saint Bride was miraculously transported by angels to witness the birth of Christ.
