The power of architecture often lies not in the whole, but in the details. This photograph of the Rotes Rathaus in Berlin shows how rhythm, repetition and materials combine to create an almost timeless appearance.
The Red Town Hall, built in the 19th century, is renowned for its distinctive brick architecture. This close-up really brings that to the fore. The warm red tones of the bricks form a solid foundation, whilst the graceful arches, windows and decorative elements lend refinement and elegance. Every window, every line and every recess contributes to a carefully constructed composition.
What stands out is the repetition: rows of windows following one another, arches creating a visual rhythm and ornaments that vary subtly without disrupting the harmony. This rhythm conveys a sense of calm, yet at the same time a feeling of monumentality. The building seems to have been constructed not only to serve a purpose, but also to impress.
The lantern in the foreground adds an extra layer to the image. As a modern element, it contrasts with the historic façade without detracting from it. On the contrary: it actually enhances the depth and firmly anchors the building in the contemporary cityscape.
By focusing on a fragment of the whole, a new way of looking emerges. It compels the viewer to reflect on form, structure and craftsmanship. Instead of the iconic overall image, the essence of the building is revealed here: an interplay of lines, light and materials that has endured for generations.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
